We all want what’s best for our pets, from heartworm prevention to diet. We understand that choosing the correct food for your pet can seem daunting.
Let’s talk about how we can work together to make sure you pick the safest food for your pet. First and foremost, make sure you discuss your pet’s diet during your annual examinations. Dr Cole is part of your pet’s healthcare team and that healthcare includes NUTRITION! She will take into account your pet’s age, metabolic needs and lifestyle to help pick the perfect food.
One way to ensure your pet is getting a safe diet is to choose a diet from a company that has their very own veterinary nutritionists on their staff and does routine ingredient and laboratory testing at all production steps. Hill’s Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, Iams Eukanuba and Royal Canin are all examples of the companies that meet those provisions. When you are standing in the pet store aisle, also make sure to look for the AAFCO statement on the back of the bag. AAFCO stands for Association of American Feed Control Officials. This is a statement of nutritional adequacy or purpose and declares the appropriate life stage of that food. (eg: growth/gestation/lactation, adult maintenance, all life stages.)
